Your daughter and periods

Puberty can be a difficult time for young girls and their parents. Hormones take over often making them moody and irritable, and all of a sudden their body starts to change. It can be quite a scary time for them, especially if they don’t know what is happening, so it’s best to talk your daughter about what changes to expect.

For most girls puberty starts around 11-12 but for some even as early as 8 and this is before their periods start. Their breasts will start to develop and they will notice hair under their arms and between their legs. Some girls start their periods as young as 8 years old, and others can be as old as 18. It’s important for you and your daughter to know that every woman is different and will start periods and puberty when her body is ready. Many girls worry about the changes they are going through and wonder if they are normal, especially if they are the first or last girl in their class to start.

Signs she might start her periods soon

  • Discharge in her underwear (this usually appears around 6 months before their first period)
  • Breasts start to develop
  • Growth spurt – she may get taller and hips get wider
  • Pubic and underarm hair
  • Mood swings
  • Spots
  • Stomach cramps

When your daughter starts her period

For most girls, getting their first period is a big deal. We’ve all been through it and know whilst some girls are very excited for this new time in their life, for others it’s a time of anticipation and often worry. When the time comes for your daughter it’s important she knows what to expect. That’s why we’ve created a website aimed specifically at young girls who may have questions about puberty and periods.

The site, becomingateen.co.uk, will give your daughter all the information and support she needs as she approaches her period and includes our downloadable becoming a teen leaflet.

If you think that she might start her periods soon, it might be a good idea to give her some towels to keep in her school bag just in case. Lil-Lets teen’s ultra towels have been designed smaller and narrower to fit younger bodies and come in a discreet drawstring bag so nobody will know what’s inside. More absorbent than the leading adult towel, they come in day and night varieties. Click here for a free sample.

Or why not try our teens starter pack which includes a range of products your daughter can try and find what's best for her. It even comes in a cute cosmetic bag so she can keep it in her school bag without anyone knowing what's inside. Click here to buy.
