For most girls, getting your first period is a momentous occasion. We’ve all been through it and know that it’s a time of anticipation and often fear. When the time comes for your daughter it’s important that she is prepared.
Approaching the subject of puberty and menstruation can be difficult, so Lil-lets have tried to make it a little easier. We've developed a website called 'Lil-lets girls' that is designed to help girls to understand menstruation and puberty and to reassure them about the things that will happen to them. Depending on how open your daughter is to talking about this delicate subject you can either direct her to the website and let her do her own research; or better still you can sit down and go through it together. The website contains animations and easy to follow explanations.
Lil-lets girls should give you all the information you need to guide and reassure your daughter, but we’ve also come up with a few tips to get you started:
- Talk to your daughter early. Although you may feel she is too young to know about menstruation and puberty, some girls’ periods start as young as 8 years old. For most people blood signifies something bad happening so it’s important that your daughter is prepared for when she gets her first period.
- Discuss the science. Depending on the age of your daughter it’s worth teaching her the basics of what is happening in the body, why women have periods and how the cycle works. This will help her to feel more at ease with the changes to her body. 'Lil-lets girls' includes sections that discuss the changes in your body and what periods are.
- Be positive and confident. Approaching this subject with positivity will encourage your daughter to feel less scared about what is happening. Using 'Lil-lets girls', discuss the emotional elements of growing up and coping with the changes that are happening to her. You may find the sections on being healthy, active and body confident helpful.
